Education Clip: Civil Rights Support

About the Episode

African Americans suffered disproportionately during the Depression. Urged by his wife, Eleanor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed several African Americans to mid-level posts to ensure New Deal programs didn’t discriminate. But Roosevelt couldn’t publically support an anti-lynching legislation for fear of losing Southern politicians’ support for New Deal legislation.
