GBH has no lack of excellent dramas to watch, so how do you decide where to start? By calling upon our Drama Concierge service, of course! For this set of recommendations, I’m keeping things simple: the following are four excellent shows I think you should watch in November. Why? Because they all give off strong late autumn vibes, and there’s something for everyone. Also, like I said, they’re excellent. All of these series are available for GBH members to stream any time on the PBS App.

The Marlow Murder Club
Some shows are just cozier than others, and The Marlow Murder Club is a supremely cozy show. Yeah, there’s murder, but like so many cozy crime shows before it, Marlow captures the essence of a cold day where you get to stay inside wearing a warm sweater and sip your hot beverage of choice. The series, which follows a group of amateur sleuths in a small English town, and plays with a lot of the tropes you’ll find on the MASTERPIECE cozy mystery bingo card, somehow manages to avoid making any of our main characters into too much of an archetype of the genre; these women feel fresh, and even more importantly, REAL. It’s a charming show that isn’t at all twee, and you can stream the whole season now.

Ridley
Maybe you’re looking for something a little more intense as you prepare for the impending winter. If that’s the case, Ridley might be the show for you. Following a retired detective who just can’t stop investigating, this relatively high-octane series delves into intense cases against the forbidding backdrop of rural northern England. Jazz is a major element of the series, not just as part of the narrative, but as a feature of the overall ambiance. The show focuses heavily on the impact of grief and the search for identity; it’s a raw, spare show that pairs well with a dark cold evening. Both seasons are streaming on the PBS app with GBH Passport.

Ripper Street
Do you prefer your detectives to be a little more old school… like, say, Victorian? And perhaps you’d like to see some folks you recognize from prestige fantasy shows and, I dunno, a Mr. Darcy? Look no further than Ripper Street, which we’ve got streaming rights to just for GBH members. This one is set in the East End of London in the period immediately following Jack the Ripper’s killing spree. For true crime fans who are also interested in history, this show is already a slam dunk, and I haven’t even mentioned the cast, which includes Matthew Macfadyen (Pride & Prejudice, Succession) Jerome Flynn (Game of Thrones) and MyAnna Buring (The Witcher).

Wolf Hall
Finally, for the folks who enjoy a period drama, but prefer political intrigue to crime solving, I absolutely must recommend Wolf Hall. The show is streaming now in advance of the new season (which premieres March 23, 2025) and it is 1000% worth seeing if you haven’t yet. Like many of our shows, the acting is absolutely phenomenal, and if I start listing out the actors you’ll recognize, we’ll all be here until December. But even beyond the ridiculously talented cast, one of the most memorable things about this series is how immersive it feels to watch. The production famously used candlelight for evening scenes, which is just one of the many production choices that lends a remarkable sense of realism to the piece (don’t worry: you can still see everything). I love a frothy, over the top historical show as much as the next gal, but Wolf Hall has a weight to it; it lets the real story speak for itself. Do not miss it.

Already watched all these shows and still need something new to watch? We’ve got loads of dramas ranging from charming to sumptuous that are streaming right now. Send an email to GBHDrama@wgbh.org with a few words about what you’re craving, and if you’re lucky, I might put together a list of personalized recommendations just for you
