In Their Own Words: Princess Diana
Sunday, August 8 at 8pm on GBH 2
If Diana, Princess of Wales, had not perished so tragically in 1997, she would have turned 60 this summer. This new documentary — told entirely through her own words — shows how the woman born Diana Spencer defied expectations and evolved into one of the most impactful icons of our time. Twenty-four years after her untimely death, the film looks back on her life through a contemporary lens that credits her choices, suffering and triumphs as the ultimate disrupter for a generation of women. —Ron
FRONTLINE: In the Shadow of 9/11
Tuesday, August 10 at 9pm on GBH 2
It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years since the 2001 terrorist attacks that we’ve come to think of as “9/11.” Those horrific events changed the world in so many ways — and threw a long shadow over subsequent investigations into terrorist activity. FRONTLINE looks at one notorious 2006 case in which seven men in Miami were indicted for the biggest alleged al-Qaeda plot since 9/11. From the director of Leaving Neverland, this is the bizarre story of an FBI sting that led to a terror prosecution, though the so-called Liberty City Seven had no weapons or connection to al-Qaeda. —Ron
Expedition with Steve Backshall: Unpacked
Wednesday, August 25 at 8pm on GBH 2
We’ve seen intrepid explorer Steve Backshall encounter some of the planet’s most awe-inspiring wildlife in some of the most remote places on Earth, but it really takes a village to successfully chart an expedition. In this two-part series, we meet the rest of the crew and learn first-hand about all the logistics planning it took to lead 10 world-first expeditions from the Arctic wilderness to flooded caves in Mexico. Interviews recorded in the field immediately following some of the most remarkable moments offer a fresh perspective on what it takes to mount an expedition into the unknown. Stay tuned for Season 2 of Expedition with Steve Backshall, coming to PBS in 2022. —Devin
Lucy Worsley’s Royal Myths & Secrets: Henry VIII’s Reformation
Sunday, August 29 at 8pm on GBH 2
Television’s reigning historian and host Lucy Worsley investigates the inside story of the infamous King Henry VIII in this fourth installment of Royal Myths & Secrets. Against a backdrop of palaces, battlefields and one very complicated marriage history, Lucy uncovers how the legend of Henry VIII was a potent mix of fact, exaggeration and manipulation. Was Henry VIII’s attempted divorce from Catherine of Aragon the real reason for England’s split from the Catholic Church? Or was a clandestine political agenda at work? As we’ve learned in previous episodes on Elizabeth I, Queen Anne and Marie Antoinette, the truth is almost always stranger and more compelling than the fiction it inspires. Stay tuned for two new episodes on Kings George III and IV, and the Romanovs, premiering in September. —Devin
Wicked in Concert
Sunday, August 29 at 9pm on GBH 2
We’re marking the return to Broadway of one of the biggest hits in the history of the Great White Way with this new musical celebration. This special performance will feature reimagined, never-before-heard arrangements created just for this broadcast, performed by celebrity artists from the worlds of film, pop music and television and filmed in multiple locations, including Washington, DC, New York and Los Angeles. The talent list is still hush-hush as I write this, but trust me, it’s gonna be good. Eighteen years on from its 2003 tryout in San Francisco (where I saw it), this show is still defying gravity. —Ron
