U.S. District Judge Marsha Pechman said it is unconstitutional to keep credible asylum-seekers in custody indefinitely as they await immigration proceedings, reversing a Trump administration order.

Days after the U.S. Supreme Court halted the addition of a citizenship question to the 2020 Census, the U.S. Census Bureau on Tuesday started printing the questionnaire without the controversial query.

A fellow SEAL had shocked the courtroom by claiming that he, not Edward Gallagher, killed the captive. The jury convicted Gallagher on one charge, posing with the body of the dead prisoner.

The new swing vote on the court is the conservative chief justice; Trump's appointees are going different directions; and Justice Ginsburg appears to be handing off the liberal torch to Justice Kagan.

The district attorney overseeing the Alabama case called the incident a tragedy and said she is deliberating whether to move forward with prosecution, reduce the charge or drop it altogether.

"This is a constitutional challenge" to Georgia's law, the plaintiffs say in the lawsuit, in which they call the abortion restrictions "an affront to the dignity and health of Georgians."

The court ruled 5-4 on Thursday, with Chief Justice John Roberts joining the four liberals in the relevant part of the outcome.

The decision comes more than a year after the Trump administration announced plans to include on forms for the national head count the question, "Is this person a citizen of the United States?"

The court's conservative, Republican-appointed majority says that voters and elected officials should be the arbiters of what is a political dispute.
