On the latest Open Studio with Jared Bowen, local photographers OJ Slaughter and Philip Keith discuss their work documenting activism and social issues via a more intimate perspective than traditional journalists. Philip Keith is a Providence-based photographer whose work has been featured in publications such as Bloomberg, Businessweek, The Guardian, and Rolling Stone. Boston photographer OJ Slaughter has been taking portraits and fashion photos since 2011, but has now turned their attention to grassroots organizing and photographing activism.
Both artists have been on the ground at protests from Boston to Washington D.C., photographing marches for justice and equality, particularly within the Black Lives Matter movement. Some of Slaughter’s work is currently on the walls at Windy Films in East Boston for a gallery event titled “The History of Right Now.”
During a recent appearance on Morning Edition with Joe Mathieu, Bowen discussed the intersection where journalism meets the world of art.
This episode also features the authors of the book, Loving: A Photographic History of Men in Love 1850s-1950s, a collection of 2800 historic images chronicling the relationships of men in love. Plus, a Reno, Nevada sustainable fine jewelry artist and a Louisiana public art project called “Herons on the Bayou."
