There are only a few days left for Boston voters to make their choices for City Council in the 2023 election, via early voting or by heading to the polls on Tuesday. In addition to several district races, eight candidates are vying against each other for four at-large seats, which represent the entire city.

Success in at-large contests can also pave the way for bigger things to come: take now-Mayor Michelle Wu, who won the most at-large votes in 2019, and now-U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley, who topped the ticket in 2017. And while incumbency is king (at least historically) in Massachusetts, at least one of the four at-large slots will go to a newcomer this time around, with incumbent Michael Flaherty stepping down after 20 years on the council.

Adam Reilly discusses the contours of the contest with Gin Dumcius of the Commonwealth Beacon and Yawu Miller, formerly the senior editor of the Bay State Banner.
