The former president now faces federal charges in a historic criminal case brought this week by Jack Smith, the special counsel for the U.S. Department of Justice. The charges include three counts of conspiracy and one count of obstruction, all for trying to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Trump, who's currently seeking reelection, has responded by claiming (as he often does) to be the victim of a politically motivated witch hunt. Meanwhile, his legal team is offering some early hints of how they'll try to prevent a landmark conviction in the months ahead. Adam Reilly is joined by Michael Astrue, who served in high-level legal positions under Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush and Barack Obama, to size up the government's arguments and the case's likely timeline.
