Once Massachusetts State Auditor Suzanne Bump announced she would not be seeking reelection, local leaders were quick to announce their candidacy.
State Sen. Diana DiZoglio and former MassDot Assistant Secretary Chris Dempsey, who are both vying for the seat, tackled the issues with Jim Braude on Greater Boston.
Dempsey said he wants to use the office as “a robust platform for advocacy for better, more efficient, equitable government.” DiZoglio said she is running to “make sure that working families like yours get access to and accountability from our state leaders.”
The candidates both gave Bump a good rating for her time in office. However, they have their own plans for the office.
DiZoglio told Braude she plans to open up state government to everyone, and look at diversifying government contracts and making sure programs such as early intervention and affordable housing are accessible and equitable.
Dempsey is pledging to monitor and track the use of American Rescue Plan funds and push for reform in state policing and climate change.
When asked about access to public records, Dempsey said he was happy to see the recent reopening of the State House, and added that the office of the state auditor has an important role in making information available to the public. He said, "This role can be a platform for greater transparency, and that's what I fought for in my career."
DiZoglio said, "I'm going to do a deep dive into our state agencies, including our Legislature, to analyze the practices and procedures that are taking place.”
Dempsey and DiZoglio are both Democrats. There are currently no Republican candidates running for state auditor.
