The mass vaccination site at Fenway Park will move to the other side of the Fens at the Hynes Convention Center in Back Bay by the end of March, Gov. Charlie Baker announced Thursday.
The two sites will overlap and both operate between March 18 and March 27, with anyone scheduled for a second dose at Fenway moved to Hynes.
"This month, the new Hynes site will ramp up to do the same volume of vaccinations that are currently being done at Fenway Park, which is about 1,500 a day," Baker said.
Baker said if supplies from federal officials increase, the Hynes site could deliver 5,000 shots per day.
"I think it's unfair that I can't currently vaccinate everyone in Massachusetts who wants to get vaccinated," Baker said. "But it's a fact. It's a reality. Until there's more vaccine, we're going to be playing this waiting game."
Baker said the vaccine site needs to abandon Fenway entirely for the Red Sox to resume operating there.
"They don't just play games there, OK? They also practice there," he said. "And so there's going to be folks in the place moving around, using the facility for one reason or another that goes way beyond just the act of actually playing a game."
The Red Sox' home opener against Baltimore is scheduled for April 1.
