Markey Backs Wu For Boston Mayor

Boston mayoral candidate Michelle Wu has picked up yet another endorsement for her campaign.

U.S. Senator Ed Markey announced his support for Wu Wednesday with a press release pointing to her focus on climate change policy.

“As mayoral candidate and as Boston city councilor, Michelle Wu has championed the Green New Deal and made transformational action on climate change central to her commitment to the City of Boston," Senator Markey's statement said. "Her proposals to expand access to free public transportation, decarbonize our economy, and invest in the basic rights of clean air and water will put Boston on a path to implement the systemic changes we need to provide our children, workers, and families a just and livable future."

Markey's backing of Wu comes despite the fact that her rival, Annissa Essaibi George, endorsed him last year in his competitive primary race against former U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy III.

Wu, who has been a favorite among young progressives who helped vault Markey to his primary victory, finished first in the city's preliminary election last month, capturing more than 30% of the vote. Wu already enjoys the support of Massachusetts’ senior senator, Elizabeth Warren.

Said Wu of the endorsement, “Senator Ed Markey’s bold vision has inspired activists, young people, and so many community members to lead, and I am honored to have his support.”

Other Wu backers include Rep. Ayanna Pressley, Suffolk County Sheriff Steven W. Tompkins and Boston's Acting Mayor Kim Janey, who placed fourth in last month's preliminary election.

She and Essaibi George are scheduled to face off in their first debate next Wednesday, Oct. 13.
