President Donald Trump’s comparison of the impeachment probe against him to a lynching has generated controversy, with many critics accusing the president of failing to understand the significance of the word to black Americans.
“All Republicans must remember what they are witnessing here — a lynching. But we will WIN!” Trump tweeted on Tuesday.
CNN’s Chief National Political Correspondent John King said that Trump’s use of the word was incorrect, but also cautioned that it may be a smokescreen to distract Americans from the information that witnesses have divulged.
“This is a trademark Trump tactic. He turns up the volume loudest. He says things that are controversial to try and turn your head,” King said. “The president understands that he’s trying to change the conversation.”
