The House Judiciary Committee held a hearing Wednesday on reparations for slavery, which was attended by luminaries like author Ta-Nehisi Coates. Callie Crossley, host of WGBH’s Under The Radar, joined Boston Public Radio Friday to give her thoughts about the hearing.
Crossley was particularity taken aback by comments from Louisiana Rep. Mike Johnson about how only a "small" subset of white Americans owned slaves.
"It continues to be distressing that people do really not understand the period of our history of enslavement. I mean, they really can not process that people were owned," she said. "Maybe you don’t know and understand the whole process, how horrible it was. Maybe you don’t get that, but to really say, quite honestly, you think it was a small subset is crazy."
