Secretary of State William Galvin says the Democratic Primary recount for the party's nomination to succeed Congresswoman Niki Tsongas is over, and Westford's Lori Trahan is the winner, though the official vote count has not been announced at of 3 p.m. Monday.
Earlier Monday, Galvin told reporters that Westford resident Lori Trahan, a former aide to former U.S. Rep. Marty Meehan, still has an edge over Andover's Dan Koh, a former aide to Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, as the votes trickle in.
"I expect this to be completed today," Galvin said at a State House press conference.
Only five towns remain in the hand recount of the over 88,000 ballots cast during the Democratic primary earlier this month. Galvin said the numbers indicate high turnout for the general election in November.
"Surely the turnout that we saw in the primary was over a million between the two major parties suggests a high level of interest in the upcoming election. So we want to make sure that those people who want to participate in this most important national election have the opportunity to do so," Galvin said.
Trahan has maintained a lead of over 100 votes as the tallies have come in. She will take on Republican Rick Green on November 6.
