Today, after constant taunting from President Donald Trump about her claims of Native American ancestry, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren released a DNA test indicating she did indeed have a relative between six and 10 generations ago who was Native American. Warren is now calling on the president to release something in exchange that he has never made public — his tax returns — and to keep his word to donate $1 million to her favorite charity if she showed she had Native American heritage. Meanwhile, the president has discussed the topic of heritage and culture using terms as derisive as “Pocahontas” to refer to Warren. This latest development in our national political discourse shows it’s going to be a long journey to 2020 — and that’s before we even get through the midterms in three weeks.
