Boston City Councilor and congressional hopeful Ayanna Pressley refused to take a stand on voting one way or the other for Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi in November, telling WGBH News the conversation is “premature.”
“I think that’s a premature conversation,” Pressley said during an interview with Boston Public Radio Thursday. “I think the Democrats have to have a conversation about the future of this party and what that looks like.”
Pressley is currently campaigning against sitting U.S. Rep Michael Capuano, who has previously called for Pelosi to step down.
When asked in April by host Jim Braude on Greater Boston if she should resign, he said, "that, or she should change, one way or the other."
"I think we need leadership that understands that, if something you're doing is not working," Capuano said, "change what you're doing."
At least 20 Democratic challengers have publicly rejected Pelosi on the campaign trail, which doesn’t help the minority leader’s long-standing unpopularity.
Pressley refused to join the flood of Democratic freshmen hopefuls calling for Pelosi’s retirement.
“That’s a broader discussion, I don’t know who else will be stepping forward,” Pressley said. “I respect Leader Pelosi for the role that she played in the ACA, and I think that’s a conversation for another day.”
