Republicans over the weekend ramped up criticism of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into the Trump campaign’s possible collusion with Russia.
WGBH News spoke with U.S. Sen. Ed Markey about the efforts by some to close down the investigation. He says all signs point to an organized effort by the president, his allies in Congress and conservative media to end Mueller’s probe.
"What we are seeing right now is an orchestrated attempt by the Republican party to discredit the investigation," Markey said. "I think it is systematic, and I think it is not going to stop."
Markey says there will be “hell to pay” with voters if Mueller is fired.
"It is going to create a constitutional crisis in our country. It will lead to a spontaneous uprising amongst the American people," he said, adding that it will start in Massachusetts.
"This is where the American revolution began," he said.
President Trump said over the weekend that dismissing Mueller is not something he’s considering, though it's unclear whether he has unilateral authority to make such a move.
