Over the next ten years, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh wants to invest as much as $1 billion to change Boston Public Schools, including upgrading current schools, closing some, and building new ones.
Walsh announced a 10-year master plan to make Boston Public Schools a "world-class" system Tuesday, enlisting the help of a local architectural firm to show him how to do it and hiring a consultant to make recommendations.
Superintendent of Public Schools Tommy Chang says part of a better learning environment is up-to-date buildings and classrooms.
So what does the BPS master plan mean for parents?
"It’s a matter of making sure dollars are used wisely so transportation costs — depending on some of the recommendations, it may mean over time students are going to schools closer to home," said Sam Tyler, president of the Boston Municipal Research Bureau, an independent watchdog group.
The consultants recommendations will be submitted to the mayor, the superintendent and the school committee by the end of 2016.
