State Rep. Marty Walsh and City Councilor John Connolly will face off in November's Boston mayoral general election after winning the top two spots in Tuesday's preliminary.

Walsh, of Dorchester, is widely seen as the labor candidate. He garnered 18.47 percent of the vote, according to the Boston Elections Department.

Walsh approached the podium at his party to the strains of "Shipping Up to Boston," by the Dropkick Murphys. He asked his supporters to make Boston "the Hub of opportunity."

'Tonight's a great start, but it's only a start," Walsh said. "We've got so much more to do in the next 6 weeks."
