Activists pushing for voting rights changes in Massachusetts are preparing for a public hearing on a bill that will introduce early voting and other measures described as the largest state election modernization in decades.
The bill scheduled for a hearing at the State House today also seeks to improve election integrity with greater transparency, random audits and training of election officials.
The legislation was introduced by state Sen. Barry Finegold, an Andover Democrat. Voting rights advocates are set to testify Wednesday afternoon before the Joint Committee on Election Law.
The measure comes a year after the House of Representatives passed a comprehensive election bill that included election audits, pre-registration and early voting. The measure fizzled after the Senate failed to act.
Supporters say the changes will help residents save time registering to vote and casting their ballots.
