Mayor Thomas Menino talked about running today, but not for re-election. This running had to do with bunnies.
“You ever see bunnies around here?” Menino said. “Where I live, I live in Hyde Park. Sometimes I wake up and see bunnies running around the backyard.”
The mayor visited a group of kindergartners at Richard J. Murphy School in Dorchester for its annual Read Across Murphy Day.
And the grandfather of six was right in his element.
“You ever read this book before, anybody?” he asked. “I never did.”
Kids were given a reporter’s dream and had the chance to ask the mayor anything they wanted, but Menino turned out to be the one asking most of the questions
“Now the easter bunny’s coming very shortly, right?” he said. “When’s he coming? What’s that, the holiday?”
The school setting was a fitting backdrop as education looks to be a top issue in the upcoming race for mayor.
City councilor John Connolly, who just launched his campaign for the top job, has given Menino an F when it comes to improving city schools.
And the mayor will hit the school trail again on Monday when he visits Dorchester’s Newcomers Academy with U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan.
But before he’s ready to reveal whether or not he’ll run for a sixth term, the mayor is sitting back and enjoying the music, as the kids sang "Mayor Menino, Mayor Menino, you are the very best."
“Where’s the press?” Menino said to laughter.
