What the Candidates Think
Obama: President Barack Obama supports gay marriage and equal rights for same-sex couples. As his website notes, “President Obama was the first sitting president to publicly announce his support for marriage for same-sex couples.” Obama’s first public support of gay marriage came last May, when he told ABC News he believed one should “treat others the way you would want to be treated."
Romney: Gov. Mitt Romney does not support gay marriage. On his website, Romney argues, “it is so important to preserve traditional marriage — the joining together of one man and one woman.” As president, Romney will support a federal marriage amendment to the Constitution that would define marriage being between a man and a woman.
