What the Candidates Think

Obama: In March 2010, the president signed the Affordable Care Act, which the Democratic Party says aims to “[make] health care available to all Americans.” The Democratic Party reports, “Health reform will also lower costs for families and for businesses and for the federal government, reducing our deficit by more than $1 trillion in the next two decades alone.”

Romney: Gov. Mitt Romney says that he will take steps to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which he calls “Obamacare,” on “[his] first day in office.” In place of the act, Romney plans to “[return] states to their proper place in charge of regulating local insurance markets and caring for the poor, uninsured, and chronically ill.”

46% of Americans believe that the Affordable Care Act will hurt the economy. Only 37% believe it will help. (Gallup, July 2012).
