Robert Lewis, Jr. is known in the Boston area for his organization The BASE, which provides baseball programming and resources for primarily Black and Latino children in Boston and several other cities. This week, he threw the ceremonial first pitch on Red Sox opening day alongside Mayor Marty Walsh and Gov. Charlie Baker in front of an empty Fenway Park, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Lewis knows firsthand about the seriousness of this ongoing public health crisis, as he was intubated and fighting for his life against COVID-19 just a few months ago.
