Under the Radar and Basic Black host Callie Crossley returned to Boston Public Radio on Friday, where she talked about the significance of More Than a Vote, the latest political endeavor from basketball icon LeBron James.

The nonprofit, which has been co-sponsored by a handful of other athletes and entertainers, seeks to raise awareness of voter suppression in Black communities, while also engaging with more traditional get-out-the-vote efforts ahead of the Novemeber election.

“It’s much needed,” Crossley said, adding that James “could just play basketball, be quite wealthy, and even do what he was already doing,” in reference to the LeBron James Family Foundation, which the athlete founded in 2004.

Crossley expressed hope that James’ initiatives might resonate with some of his less politically inclined fans. The star currently has over 66 million followers on Instagram alone.

“The platform that he has is enormous,” she said. “What he can do with that, in a positive way, is something that I’m so grateful [for]."

"He risks a lot!” she said. "I know he’s got a lot, but he risks a lot by deciding to stand out there, and I appreciate the fact that it’s worth the risk for him."
