As the national death toll nears 100,000 from the coronavirus pandemic this week, all 50 states have taken steps to reopen their economies in some capacity.
NBC News political director Chuck Todd told Boston Public Radio on Thursday the march forward is akin to blowing a major deadline and moving on out of necessity.
"It feels like we basically blew our assignment when it came to try to stop this pandemic," he said. "We blew our assignment in trying to control the pandemic, and now we're like: 'Alright now we've got to live with it.'"
Todd said some governors are plowing ahead more quickly and eagerly than others, but all of them have acknowledged the current status "is as good as it's going to get."
"The federal government has said 'We're not going to do this, we're not going to run the tracing program,'" he said. "I think the governors are sort of stuck."
