In a test run by the ACLU, Amazon's facial recognition technology mistakenly matched photos of multiple Boston sports players with mugshots.
Carol Rose, executive director of the ACLU of Massachusetts joined Boston Public Radio Tuesday to speak about the ACLU's "Press Pause on Face Surveillance" program, which released the results of this test on Oct. 21.
"We used the Amazon recognition technology they give to the police departments to use," Rose said. "We ran it against a bunch of athletes here in Massachusetts, whose faces are easily available, compared it to a mugshot database and found was that 1 in 6 were falsely matched."
The ACLU is calling on Massachusetts to better regulate the use of facial recognition technology, Rose said.
"What we're calling for in the legislature is a moratorium, a press pause on face surveillance," she said. "If we can press pause, then we can bring all the stakeholders to the table and begin to come up with regulations."
Carol Rose is Executive Director of ACLU of Massachusetts. During her interview on Tuesday with Boston Public Radio, she also discussed an upcoming hearing on a bill to enable undocumented immigrants to obtain driver's licenses.
