The Stigma-Breaking Doctors & Nurses Who Cared For San Francisco’s Early AIDS Patients
When the AIDS epidemic first exploded in the U.S., those who suffered from the largely-misunderstood disease were heavily stigmatized and often blamed for their sickness, as gay and bisexual men made up much of the initially afflicted population in this country. Some doctors and nurses even refused to treat these patients. But in San Francisco, one hospital created a dedicated unit, known as Ward 5B, that specifically cared for people with HIV or AIDS.
In for Jim Braude, Adam Reilly was joined by Alison Moed, one of the nurses from that unit, and Hank Plante, a journalist who covered the AIDS crisis in San Francisco from its early days — both of whom are featured in a new documentary about the unit, "5B."
Reporter Jenifer McKim On Jurors Siding With Darrell Jones In Retrial Of 1985 Case
After spending 32 years behind bars for a murder he always maintained he did not commit, Darrell Jones is officially a free man after
a jury found him not guilty this week in a retrial. Jones’ conviction was first vacated in 2017, when a superior court judge ruled his initial trial was rife with problems: a video of a witness deposition that had been doctored by Brockton police, and evidence of racism among some jurors. After Plymouth County prosecutors announced their intent to re-charge Jones, his lawyers pushed for the case to be dismissed. While that motion was denied, the second trial lasted only three days, with Jones declared not guilty on Tuesday after just two hours of deliberation by the jury.
In for Jim Braude, Adam Reilly was joined by Jenifer McKim, the senior reporter behind the New England Center for Investigative Reporting’s coverage of Jones’ case.
