The Department of Justice called for the ACLU to use their “considerable resources” to reunite the rest of the children that had been separated from their parents by the Trump administration at the border, in a court document filed last Thursday.
The Executive Director of the ACLU of Massachusetts Carol Rose told Boston Public Radio Tuesday that it was not the responsibility of the ACLU to fix the problem the government created. “It was The government’s unconstitutional separation practice that led to this crisis and they need to clean it up,” Rose said.
Rose called for the government to use their considerable power to rectify this problem and according the the Washington Post, reunite the over 500 children that are still separated from their families. “They can put out alerts, they can work with the governments in these countries and with human rights organizations. It is not that the ACLU unwilling to help or assist in anyway, it is just that it is not our responsibility,” she said.
“It is going to be costly, it is going to be time consuming, it is going to require a lot of resources, but we have the most powerful government in the world, and they caused this problem in the first place, so they can invest the resources that it takes to fix the problem that they caused, and they should. It is a moral issue, it is a legal issue, it is a question of who we are as a country, and as a people,” Rose continued.
