Senator Ed Markey told Boston Public Radio on Monday he supports new impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump for his responsibility in inciting people to storm the Capitol Building.
"To my colleagues who say we must turn the page, I respectfully disagree," said Markey. "We have to face the reality. We have to face our history. It was an attempted coup, incited by the president."
Trump faces a single charge — “incitement of insurrection” — in an impeachment resolution that could go to a vote in the House by mid-week. The timeline of a Senate trial remains unclear.
Markey also said he thinks the Senate should "consider censuring" Republican Sens. Joshua Hawley and Ted Cruz for repeating Trump's lies about the election. Both Hawley and Cruz voted to object to the certification of President-elect Joe Biden's victory.
"There has to be accountability for the members who helped President Trump to uphold his lies about election fraud," he said.
Markey warned about the potential for future violence, specifically on Jan. 20, when Biden is scheduled to be inaugurated.
"I do believe there's a real risk in our country right now," said Markey. "[Trump] has a capacity to incite additional mobs for the inauguration, and I'm sure he's — I hate to say it — I'm sure he's going to try and find a way to do that."
