Chasten Buttigieg, husband of Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Ind., and former Democratic presidential candidate, spoke to Boston Public Radio on Wednesday about his new memoir "I Have Something to Tell You."
The memoir describes his life growing up as a gay person in the Midwest, the historic role he played in his husband's presidential campaign, and his hope for the future of the LGBTQ community.
"We haven't gotten to where we need to be in terms of equality in the LGBTQ community across this country," Buttigieg said. "That's a reality for queer people, still in places like Boston, in places like rural Michigan, and Iowa. It's just a fact that it is still unsafe to be gay in many places in this country."
Buttigieg also commented about Tuesday night's first presidential debate between President Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden.
"The only president I saw on that stage last night was Joe Biden," he said. "It was frustrating, to say the least — most alarmingly because our president still refuses to denounce white supremacy. I thought that was the glaring event of the evening."
