After years of President Donald Trump’s refusals to release his tax returns, The New York Times obtained the records and published a story highlighting his many years of paying zero income tax. The story has raised questions about the fairness of the American tax code system and tax enforcement, the extent to which Trump’s self-made billionaire status was a farce, and — perhaps most crucially — whether Trump has committed tax fraud.
