Donald Reed Herring, Sen. Elizabeth Warren's oldest brother, died Tuesday of the coronavirus. He was 86.
Warren tweeted Thursday confirming the news, thanking the nurses and staff who took care of Herring and commemorating him.
"What made him extra special was his smile — quick and crooked, it always seemed to generate its own light," she wrote. "It’s hard to know that there was no family to hold his hand or to say 'I love you' one more time."
Herring was a U.S. Air Force veteran who served in Vietnam. He lived in Newcastle, Oklahoma and is survived by his wife, Judith Ann Hart, three siblings, and two sons, according to The Boston Globe.
Warren has represented Massachusetts in the Senate since 2013. She ran for president in the Democratic primary in 2019, ending her bid earlier this year. Warren is a vocal critic of Trump and has sharply criticized his response to the coronavirus pandemic.
