The Senate Judiciary Committee has voted along party lines to advance Judge Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court to the full senate for a vote, but with a caveat proposed by Sen. Jeff Flake. The committee's vote was divided on party lines, with 11 Republicans voting to advance the nomination, and 10 Democrats voting to oppose it.
Flake, speaking before the committee's vote, said that he would vote to move the nomination forward with the understanding that there would be a delay of up to one week to allow the FBI to investigate the allegations against Kavanaugh.
Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley noted the timing on Senate vote was up to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
The vote comes a day after the nation witnessed nine hours of emotional testimony by Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford, who is one of three women who have accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault or misconduct. Kavanaugh has vigorously denied all allegations against him.
Ford said in her testimony she was 100 percent certain that it was Kavanaugh who assaulted her when they were in high school. Kavanaugh also said in his testimony he was certain he did not assault Ford.
