Four Things to Know Today
1. The Museum of Fine Arts will close its Benin Kingdom Gallery on April 28, the museum announced Tuesday . The gallery opened in 2013 after the MFA accepted works lent from the collection of Robert Owen Lehman. As part of their agreement, the museum would eventually acquire the pieces. But now, Lehman has requested these artworks be returned to him. “Unfortunately, we were not able to make progress on a mutually agreeable resolution for our gallery of Benin bronzes,” said MFA Director Matthew Teitelbaum in a press release. Recent decades have heard open discussion about the issues of provenance of certain objects in artistic institutions — especially when such works on display were acquired through acts of theft and other violations . Fittingly, the MFA’s announcement cites ethical quandaries around the Benin artifacts.
2. The report is in: from the working group assigned to determine what’s next for Carney Hospital, that is . Yesterday, the group’s final report came with the recommendation that the now-shuttered medical facility should continue to provide health care services. The 32-member group was assigned by Gov. Maura Healey to present recommendations on what should happen with the site after Carney closed last summer. The report states that the site could accommodate multiple uses including direct health care services and other services that would improve health outcomes for underserved communities.

3. From the “Birthplace of America”: Last weekend, Lexington and Concord celebrated the 250th anniversary of the start of the Revolutionary War. That series of events continued with a ceremony yesterday, which included the Lexington Minute Men Honor Guard, and saw 49 individuals from 28 countries sworn in as American citizens on the Lexington Battle Green — the first time a naturalization ceremony has been held on the historic battlefield.
4. Cape Cod housing crunch: The Barnstable County Assembly of Delegates passed a resolution last week 14-1 declaring a housing crisis on Cape Cod . The resolution calls on the county administrator to put together a working group to help develop regional housing solutions. Few Cape Cod year-rounders would argue with the idea that the region suffers from a housing crisis. “The policies of the governments that we currently have have failed the community in certain respects, and have singularly created this crisis on the Cape,” said Deputy Speaker of the Assembly Dan Gessen, who introduced the resolution.
