There are just a few days left in 2022, and all of them are going to be much milder than average.
Typically, during this time of year we would find temperatures in the 30s to lower 40s, not the 40s and 50s. But that's what we're going to see over the next several days and into next week.
Thursday and Friday feature lots of sunshine and temperatures approaching 50 today, and getting into the 50s for Friday. There will be plenty of sunshine both days, although some cloudiness is likely on Friday afternoon.
For the final day of the 2022, clouds will be the dominant weather feature. It will be mild, with readings getting back into the 50s. I am expecting rainfall to overspread the area from the southwest during the late afternoon and evening, and rain will be falling everywhere before midnight.
This isn't going to be a big heavy rain storm. Nevertheless, if you're going to be outside for First Night festivities, you'll want to plan on rain gear. The good news is that temperatures will hover around 50 degrees the entire night, so it will not be cold. You can see on the forecast model loop below how the rain overspreads the region Saturday. This is based on one model, but most of the guidance I use to forecast supports the timing of the rain’s arrival Saturday evening.
The rain comes to an end Sunday morning, and with the system being fairly progressive I think the sun could be out by the end of the day, boosting temperatures well into the 50s. The Patriots game will be played with dry conditions — more like early November than early January.
The mild weather continues for the first full week of the year with some indications of a scarcity of cold air and snow lasting even into the second week. This doesn't mean winter won't make an appearance: There's still plenty of time left. Have a happy New Year.
