Some of the state's poorest workers are getting a raise this New Year, as the state's new $14.25 minimum wage goes into effect.

The $.75-an-hour increase is the last one scheduled under current law before hitting $15 in 2023.

It's equivalent to an extra $30 a week or over $1,500 a year for a standard 40 hour work week.

The conservative Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance warns that higher labor costs for employers will be passed down to consumers at the same time inflation is the highest it's been in decades.

"Nearly every product is more expensive and Massachusetts is going to exacerbate the rise in costs by mandating that our state pay the highest price for minimum wage labor in New England," said Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance spokesman Paul Diego Craney.

Next year's $15 dollar wage floor will be the last under current law, but some Democrats on Beacon Hill want to push it even higher.
