Tonight, we continued our look at pandemic learning loss and what that means for students beyond just academics.

Chad Mazza is the assistant superintendent at Somerville Public Schools. He said the district has always prioritized taking care of students' basic needs, but that those efforts have been magnified by COVID-19.

Mazza said Somerville Public Schools plans to have supplemental learning and activities this summer for students to help in their healing.

"So our focus over the summer is really to provide a comprehensive menu of summer programming that will not only supplement students' learning but also support students continuing the reentry into a learning space after a really unprecedented year," he said. "We also understand that students will be at different places and readiness, both academically and ... emotionally."

Framingham Public Schools are working on a similar program.

Tiffant Lillie, director of community resource development, said the district is providing this programming free of charge to all students thanks in part to fedeal dunds.

"We had tried to be thoughtful about surveying students and meeting with them at lunches and really talking to them about what they wanted to see this summer," Lillie said. "We're really trying to ensure that our programs that have academic focus are actually really enriched with topics like esports, topics like robotics and media production, and just topics that the students will really enjoy and flourish with project-based learning."
