Starting this summer, over a hundred single caretaker households in Cambridge will get monthly $500 payments as part of a new pilot program called Cambridge RISE, short for Recurring Income for Success and Empowerment.
Cambridge will be the first city in New England to launch such a guaranteed income program.
Mayor Sumbul Siddiqui said that a lot of the details will be worked out over the next few weeks, but the need is clear.
"I've seen it first hand," Siddiqui said. "The calls that come to my office. Many single caretaker households who have so much need."
Families will be selected by lottery in June. Similar pilot programs have been launched and studied in other parts of the country.
