Golf courses are officially back open in Massachusetts, and Emily Rooney is t’ed off.
The Beat the Press host joined Boston Public Radio Friday, where she laid bare her views on why golf got reopening preference over her own sport of choice, tennis.
"Golf is largely a white guy’s sport, let’s face it,” Rooney said, lamenting what she called the influence of golf lobbyists over Gov. Charlie Baker. "Tennis is much more of a family [sport] — more women play tennis, for God’s sake. There’s no lobby.”
She argued that court owners are ready to reopen now, and could easily accommodate new safety guidelines.
"A lot of places around the country have already figured this out,” she said. "Everybody brings their own can of balls, the server … you know, you mark your can so you’re only playing [with your equipment]. And you can flip a ball without touching it. It’s paternalistic, at this point. We need to have a little bit of freedom.”
