Governor Charlie Baker announced the activation of the Massachusetts National Guard Thursday to support operations to slow the spread of COVID-19.
According to the announcement, 2,000 members will be called upon to respond to "requests from state agencies for equipment, logistics, warehousing, and related duties."
“Activating the National Guard will help support our Administration’s efforts to keep residents safe and secure during the COVID-19 outbreak,” said Gov. Charlie Baker. “The expertise of the Massachusetts National Guard will benefit our communities with logistical support and other assistance as we continue to respond to this crisis.”
The 2,000 represents about a quarter of the over 8,000 member Guard, according to its website.
Municipal agencies seeking support from the Guard should submit their requests to the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, the announcement states.
