Boston Globe business columnist Shirley Leung said on Boston Public Radio on Friday that she wants "cautious Charlie" Baker back, referring to her nickname for the governor's penchant for moderate proposals.
"Charlie Baker, our governor, in his first term more than second term, is incredibly cautious," she said. "But he has been more bold in his second term, like the vaping ban for example, and climate initiative ... I want cautious Charlie to come back, when it comes to the sale of the Hynes."
Baker has been pushing legislation to sell the Hynes Convention Center and use the proceeds to fund an expanded Boston Convention and Exhibition Center in the Southie neighborhood, which is occupied for more of the year than Hynes, said Leung.
In Leung's latest column in the Boston Globe, she warns of a rushed sale with little consideration of how to replace the space.
"It just feels like a regular real estate transaction rather than six acres in the heart of Boston, we have to be really careful about what we do with that site, there's been very little talk about what will go up there, and also what about the public good," she said.
Leung said the Baker administration has announced an economic study to look at the impacts.
