Dying behind bars is a bleak fate, but a new Massachusetts law gives some very ill and old prisoners a chance at escaping the destiny through medical parole. If it works, the practice could save the state millions of dollars in medical costs and spending on prison officers required to guard the sickest inmates in off-site hospitals. Gov. Charlie Baker is already pushing back, saying he doesn’t want to see first-degree murderers and some sex offenders get a shot at the parole.
