After a series of unpopular reform proposals, including new school start times, some parents think it's high time to give some of the power over the school committee back to the people. Right now, the seven-member committee charged with overseeing the network of 125 schools is appointed by Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, but some argue it should be the voters who choose — a system the city had, but did away with nearly 30 years ago after controversy over the busing program, which was widely viewed as racist.
Adam Reilly was joined by At-Large City Councilor Annissa Essaibi-George, a former Boston School teacher who now chairs the city's Committee on Education, and Jane Miller, a Boston parent who recently reignited the conversation when she created a Facebook poll asking other parents to weigh in.
