CBS News on Friday reported that U.S. intelligence officials have issued an internal alert about a potential terror threat today, one day before the Presidential Election. But the FBI in Boston says the alert should be regarded with caution.
According to the report, al Qaeda could be planning attacks in New York, Texas and Virginia. But the Boston FBI —which oversees security for the entire region—told WGBH “at this point in time there are no specific or credible threats to our area.” Thomas Abt at Harvard’s Kennedy School—a former Deputy Director for Public Safety and Homeland Security for New York— said threats of terrorism on the eve of this historic election is meant to accomplish one thing –to discourage voting. Abt said the response should be emphatic.
"I think we should go on with our normal traditions. I really think that the most patriotic thing that you can do to combat terrorism is to vote and exercise your franchise."
The Joint Terrorism Task Force in Boston says it is monitoring intelligence but emphasizes that these reports are unconfirmed.
