The Chinese government has lifted a ban on a one-child policy that’s been in place for decades. WGBH News caught up with a Boston man who moved from China 2 years ago, who explained how important this is.
23-year-old advertising executive Joe Feng grew up lonely in the Hunan province of China.
“I always wanted a brother or a sister but unfortunately I can’t,” he says.
His parents were restricted to just one child and he only has two first cousins so today's announcement that the one-child ban has been lifted is huge.
“I’m happy to see that because now they can have sisters brothers which I can’t or couldn’t.”
Boys are more desirable in China, so Feng thinks American adoptions of girls will continue, but this may make parents think twice.
“If they can have two children when they have a girl first maybe they can have another boy instead of abandoning the girl,” says Feng.
He thinks two is better than one, but worries about the cost.
“In my opinion, I wouldn’t have two children in the near future because its too expensive.”
But for people back home…it’s still good to have the option.
