In the wake of the shooting at Umpqua Community College in Oregon, Democrats in Congress have launched a renewed push for gun control legislation like expanded background checks.
Congressman Seth Moulton said he was frustrated by the response from his Republican colleagues in the House leadership, he told Boston Public Radio Thursday.
"96% of America believes we should have universal background checks for guns and we can't even have a vote on the issue because the Republican leadership, controlled by the far right, won't even let us vote," Moulton said. "It's shameful."
Discouraged by the response from the House leadership, Moulton says gun reform advocates need to look outside the box—and outside of their normal alliances—to move forward.
"It's not enough for those of us in the Democratic Party or those of us on the left to scream louder and louder," he said.
He continued: "I'd like to see some of the folks coming together to support comprehensive immigration reform, like church groups—including some very conservative church organizations—who are supporting that change. I'd like to see them also get behind gun control, because this is about saving lives."
