Updated, 5:12 p.m.: The mother of Bella Bond — formerly known as Baby Doe — and the mother's boyfriend appeared in a Dorchester court Monday, charged with accessory to murder and murder, respectively.
Michael McCarthy is being held without bail, while Rachelle Bond is being held on $1 million bail.
The arraignment of McCarthy and Bond for the murder of Bella Bond was intense, starting with a warning from the judge about any outbursts. As 2-year-old Bella Bond's last hours were detailed by prosecutors, a woman yelled at the couple, "I hope you rot in hell." She was rushed out by court officers.
Bella Bond was found in a trash bag on Deer Island in Boston Harbor in June, prompting a nationwide search for her identity. The Suffolk County District Attorney's Office says McCarthy entered Bella's room to calm her when she wouldn't sleep. Rachelle Bond then found McCarthy with his hand on Bella's abdomen, with her face reddened and swollen. The pair used a large amount of heroin before McCarthy dumped Bella's body in the water by the Seaport District. Bond, the DA's office says, called the baby a "demon."
Chyna Brown, who identified herself as a neighbor, and said she came to this hearing for Bella, says she always had a bad feeling about McCarthy.
"He was very scary," she said. "I would be totally afraid to see him and very uncomfortable around him. He was always strung out, looked dead to me."
McCarthy and Bond are due back in court October 20.
