Firefighters battled a two-alarm blaze with flames and smoke that could be seen across the city Tuesday evening.

The fire, in a vacant building in Boston's North End, sent two firefighters and one police officer to local hospitals. One responder was treated for burns, another for dehydration and another for smoke inhalation.

The building, at 3 Stillman Place, was abandoned, but neighbors were evacuated. It all happened just before 4 p.m.

Sydney Spence says he had just arrived home from work when he heard an alarm and Boston Police Officer Shana Cottone at his door.

“She kicked the door in and told me get out, fire, fire," he said. "Got us all out."

Cottone is known for immediately helping victims of the Boston Marathon bombing, where she was a first responder. The fire broke out on the top two floors of the four-story brick building. The Boston Fire Department says firewalls appear to have stopped the blaze from spreading to the attached, neighboring buildings. The Boston Fire Chief estimates damage at $1 million.
