Deborah Hughes is Chief Executive Officer of Brookview House, a Dorchester and Roxbury nonprofit that serves homeless women and their children. Brookview House began in 1990 as a way to help families who couldn't find help elsewhere. In 1996, the Brookview House expanded its mission by creating additional development programs for homeless kids.
Last year, Hughes received a "Be the Change" award from the Massachusetts Conference for Women in recognition for her work at Brookview House.
Brookview House serves approximately 350 mothers and children every year. Hughes said an astounding 92 percent of those who pass through Brookview House never become homeless again.
Hughes sat down with Jim Braude and Margery Eagan on Boston Public Radio to talk about the problem of homelessness in Boston, as well as what's driven her work at Brookview House over the years.
