Sony Pictures' reversal of an earlier decision to cancel the release of the "The Interview" -- the Rogen-directed satire that provoked an international incident with North Korea -- and instead allow a limited theatrical release, spells some good news for Christmas Day moviegoers -- nationally and locally.
At least one Boston-area cinema has plans to start showing "The Interview" on Christmas Day, while another movie theater has made plans to commence showings of the controversial film in 2015.
Apple Cinemas in Cambridge has announced it will begin showing the film on Christmas Day. The Somerville Theater has also announced it will start screening the movie on January 2, 2015.
Sony's initial decision to cancel the December 25 release of the film came after threats from Guardians of Peace -- a group claiming responsibility for the Sony server hacks -- and drew widespread criticism from the American public and officials, including President Barack Obama.
The FBI said last week that the North Korean government was behind the hacking attack.
